Mike Tyson awed the world with his boxing skills in the ring in the 1980s. But in the 1990s, he started making headlines for the wrong reasons. On Feb. 10, 1992, he was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant.
«I learned about life from my losses. I’ve learned that as I get older and I lose my friends, my children, my teeth, my hair—and eventually, I’m going to lose my life—life is all about loss,» he says. «We’re going to be old one day. We’re going to lose our teeth, lose our eyesight, lose our hair, lose our dick, lose everything we thought made us who we were. We’re going to lose our identity. In the end, we’ll be grateful if someone has a picture of us on the family wall, if they even put up a picture of us.»
A month later, Tyson’s co-manager, Jim Jacobs, died. While Tyson was at the funeral, his wife Robin was at the bank, demanding to know the whereabouts of «her money.» Shortly thereafter, they confronted Tyson’s surviving manager, Bill Cayton, demanding a full accounting and ultimately reducing his share of the champ’s earnings from one-third to 20 percent. Tyson’s behavior became increasingly erratic, ramming cars into trees, getting into a street brawl with boxer Mitch Green and, on a disastrous trip to Russia, chasing Robin and her mother through the hotel corridors in a drunken rage. In a nationally televised interview with Barbara Walters, Givens told America of her «life of horror» with a manic-depressive Mike Tyson, while the heavyweight champ sat meekly at her side, looking to some observers like a tranquilized pit bull. Shortly after the interview Tyson smashed up furniture, glassware, and windows at their mansion in Bernardsville, N.J., and Givens fled to Los Angeles, where she filed for divorce. At the time, she was generally seen as the villain. Her image was splashed across the tabloids with the simple caption: Most Hated Woman in America.
Netflix has promoted it as potentially the most watched combat-sports event in history—making Tyson the box-office bridge between boxing’s former glory and its brave new reality in the world of social media.
The turning point in Tyson’s life came around 1980, after he had spent two years at a facility for juvenile offenders in upstate New York. A teacher there introduced him to a local septuagenarian and legendary boxing manager, Constantine «Cus» D’Amato. D’Amato recognized Tyson’s promise, and the teen began training in earnest for the ring. D’Amato also became a father figure for the teen, and even his official legal guardian after his mother died. When Tyson failed to win a spot on the 1984 U.S. Olympic boxing team, he decided to turn professional in early 1985. Over the next year, he knocked out seven other fighters in the first round. He became boxing’s youngest heavyweight champion when he won a World Boxing Council (WBC) match against Trevor Berbick in November 1986. Four months later, he won the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt, and later in 1987 took an International Boxing Federation (IBF) title.
«It was great in Tokyo, but you got the sense nobody was taking it seriously. I never doubted it at all. I knew it was my time. Leading up to the first title fight in 87′, I was actually given a pretty decent chance of winning the fight. Losing that fight really made it seem like, ‘He might as well pack it in. I don’t know what he’s fighting for.’ Then coming back around and getting a title shot against Godzilla, was like, ‘Oh my God, he’s really gonna kill himself!’ Succeeding was the ultimate, ‘I told you so.’ Tyson was a student of the game, was in there til’ the end, showed a lot of savvy.»
Tyson has stayed in the limelight by promoting various websites and companies. In the past Tyson had shunned endorsements, accusing other athletes of putting on a false front to obtain them. Tyson has held entertainment boxing shows at a casino in Las Vegas and started a tour of exhibition bouts to pay off his numerous debts.
He bounced back in style by knocking out – and potentially retiring – former world champion Deontay Wilder. Since then, Zhang has been called out relentlessly by in-form heavy-hitter Martin Bakole, who, after his knockout win over Jared Anderson, said he was the ‘most avoided man on the planet.’
Joseph Parker has just been interviewed by DAZN and he has confirmed his next fight will be a rematch with Zhilei Zhang. He says: «Zhang is a tough man. But Andy Lee told me to keep my composure and to follow the plan. I am very happy and I can’t wait to go back home to celebrate.
